Are We Outsourcing Our Minds to AI?

Shaw and Gideon Nave, warn that generative AI is short-circuiting that balance, tempting us to outsource our mental heavy lifting.

In their provocative paper, “Thinking—Fast, Slow, and Artificial,” the authors tackle this exact dilemma. Its core message is a stark warning about our relationship with technology. As AI handles complex tasks, we risk sliding into “cognitive surrender” — Instead of wrestling with data or building arguments from scratch, we let AI spit out instant answers. The convenience is addictive, but it comes at a hidden cost: the quiet fading of our ability to solve hard problems on our own. It is a profound behavioral shift where we stop trying to understand the underlying ‘why’ and simply accept whatever the machine hands us.
